PhD contract – Chair of Excellence in the Holocaust and Genocidal Enterprises 2026–2029
The University of Caen Normandy is inviting applications for a three-year PhD contract starting on 1 October 2026. At the intersection of history, literature and sociology, the thesis will focus on the memory of mass violence, as it has been imprinted on the landscape of Central and Eastern Europe as well as on the territory of the former USSR, from the 19th century to the present day. The landscape will be examined as a medium of memory comparable to other forms of content passed down from generation to generation: narratives (or silences), photographs, documents, etc. The project will also include a reflection on the processes of transmission or non-transmission of landscape memory across a spectrum ranging from symbolic saturation (with certain camps having become tourist destinations) to apathy and silence.
