Brain, Blood and Memory @ Caen Normandie (BBM@C): a structuring and transformative research initiative within CaeSAR

The Brain, Blood and Memory Institute @ Caen Normandie (BBM@C), officially created on March 30, 2026, represents a major step forward in structuring research excellence at the Caen-Normandie site. Established as a Scientific Interest Group (GIS), it brings together founding partners including Inserm, the University of Caen Normandie, Caen Normandie University Hospital (CHU), and the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE).

BBM@C is a unique and competitive structure designed to optimize and strengthen research and innovation in the field of blood–brain interactions. It places a particular emphasis on neurovascular disorders, especially stroke, which remains a major global public health challenge. This thematic focus is fully aligned with the strategic priorities of the Caen-Normandie site, while also opening the way to future developments in related fields such as neuroinflammation, brain aging, and psychiatry.

Building on the success of the Blood and Brain @ Caen Normandie (BB@C), the institute adopts an integrative and translational approach at the interface between fundamental research, clinical applications, and methodological innovation. It relies on the scientific convergence of leading research teams, notably within the PhIND and NIMH units, covering vascular pathophysiology, in vivo imaging, biomarkers, memory, cognition, and non-pharmacological interventions.

A clear ambition: structuring excellence and increasing international visibility

The main objectives of BBM@C are threefold:

  • to develop a coherent and ambitious scientific strategy
  • to provide targeted resources supporting applications to national and international funding calls
  • to foster and support emerging and innovative internal research projects

These three strategic levers are designed to generate a strong transformative effect, enhancing both the visibility and the attractiveness of the Caen research ecosystem at the European and international levels.

A key long-term objective is to establish a sustainable and scalable institute, capable of supporting the growth of research themes and teams over time, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific excellence.

A central pillar of the CaeSAR strategy

Fully embedded within the CaeSAR initiative (Caen Strategy for Research Acceleration), BBM@C contributes to positioning Caen as a leading hub in integrative and translational neuroscience. Through its structuring role, international governance, and strong scientific ambition, the institute is expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating innovation and addressing major societal and health challenges.

BBM@C embodies a forward-looking vision: to build a globally recognized center of excellence dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving care in brain-related disorders
